Gypsum is a mineral (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O) that occurs in nature as both a mineral and, when in massive form, a rock. Massive deposits are present as sedimentary beds of varying thickness in the subsurface within the Trinity Group in southwest Arkansas.
In the early days of gypsum mining, farmers drove their horses and wagons as far as 100 miles to purchase supplies of "land plaster" for use as fertilizer, or soil "sweetener" as it was called at the time. The primary use of gypsum through this period was as land plaster and fertilizer until about 1880.
The mining method adopted is open cast mining with associated drill, blast, load and haul operations. Generally top slicing is adopted for mining, wherein road leading from entry point of the deposit is prepared and mining is progressed from top to bottom in slices equivalent to the bench height.
